Supporting America's Dedicated Law Enforcement

Supporting America's Law Enforcement Professionals

The current state of law enforcement in the United States highlights the dedication and bravery of officers who risk their lives daily to serve and protect their communities. This bill aims to acknowledge and address the challenges faced by these professionals, including increased assault rates, mental health concerns, and inadequate support.

Recognizing the Challenges Faced by Law Enforcement Officers

The following statistics underscore the difficulties faced by law enforcement officers:

  • Over 800,000 law enforcement officers in the United States risk their lives daily to serve and protect their communities.
  • In 2023, over 79,000 law enforcement officers were assaulted by criminals, resulting in the highest officer assault rate in the past 10 years.
  • More than 2,500 law enforcement officers have died in the line of duty during the past decade.
  • The number of full-time State and local officers dropped by 5.3 percent between 2019 and 2021, leaving behind a dangerously low level of sworn officers to serve and protect our communities.

Supporting Law Enforcement Officers

Now, we must come together as a nation to provide the necessary support for law enforcement officers. The following measures are essential:

  • Increase policing personnel and improve training programs to enhance officer safety and effectiveness.
  • Provide tough penalties for assaulting or killing law enforcement professionals, ensuring that those who put our officers in harm's way face serious consequences.
  • Offer increased mental health resources for officers, addressing the growing concern of officer mental health.

"We Must Do More to Support Our Law Enforcement Officers"

As stated by Congress:

Congress highly respects and values our Nation's law enforcement professionals, greatly appreciates all that they do to protect and serve our communities, remembers and honors those officers and families who have experienced a death or injury in the line of duty, calls for increased measures to be taken to maximize the safety and well-being of our officers, including more policing personnel, improved training and equipment, tough penalties for assaulting or killing a law enforcement professional, and increased mental health resources for officers, and calls on all levels of government to ensure that our law enforcement professionals receive the support and resources needed to keep America safe.
