The Weather-Safe Energy Act of 2025
SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE
This Act may be cited as the “Weather-Safe Energy Act of 2025”.
SEC. 2. ESTABLISHMENT OF WEATHER-SAFE ENERGY PLAT-FORM AND SUPPORT FOR ELECTRICITY SYSTEM PLANNING AND OPERATIONAL MODELING
- (1) A summary of current efforts in federally funded research and development centers to develop the use of meteorological, hydrological, and extreme weather event data for energy system modeling.
- (2) A description of the specific actions that the Secretary shall take to carry out subsection (b).
The Secretary shall establish an open-access digital tool known as the “Weather-Safe Energy Platform” to provide high-resolution data of meteorological and hydrological variables suitable for electricity system planning and operational models.
SEC. 3. FUNDING AND AUTHORIZATION OF APPROPRIATIONS FOR ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE ESTABLISHMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF THE WEATHER-SAFE ENERGY PLATFORM
- (1) The Secretary shall make available not to exceed $50,000,000 for fiscal year 2026 for the establishment and maintenance of the Weather-Safe Energy Platform.
- (2) The amount made available under paragraph (1) is in addition to any other appropriations available to the Department of Energy for fiscal year 2026.
SEC. 4. AUTHORIZATION OF APPROPRIATIONS FOR ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE ESTABLISHMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF THE WEATHER-SAFE ENERGY PLATFORM
The Secretary is authorized to make available not to exceed $50,000,000 for fiscal year 2026 for the establishment and maintenance of the Weather-Safe Energy Platform.
SEC. 5. REPORTS TO CONGRESS
- (1) Not later than 5 years after the date of the enactment of this section, and on a periodic basis thereafter not less frequently than every 3 years, the Secretary shall submit to the appropriate congressional committees a report containing descriptions of—
- (2)(A) The funds used to carry out this section, including grants made pursuant to subsection (c).
- (B) The outcomes achieved through such grants.
- (C) The development and deployment of the Weather-Safe Energy Platform.
- (D) The advancements in the research carried out pursuant to subsection (b).
