Meet Tyler Phillips, the Marlins Pitcher Who Paid Tribute to His Late Grandfather
Tyler Phillips, a pitcher for the Miami Marlins, recently visited the Pentagon as part of an honor mission to pay tribute to his late grandfather, Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Frank C. Phillips.
“It was a tremendous honor to visit the Pentagon and to be a part of the ceremony honoring my grandfather’s service,” said Phillips.
A Legacy of Service
- Phillips’ grandfather, Frank C. Phillips, served in the Air Force for 26 years, including time during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars.
- Phillips is proud to carry on his grandfather’s legacy of service and sacrifice.
“I’m so proud to be a part of this tradition,” said Phillips. “My grandfather was an inspiration to me, and I hope that I can make him proud by serving my country.”

A Tribute from the Field
Phillips visited the Pentagon as part of an honor mission, where he was greeted by senior military leaders and dignitaries.
- The ceremony included a 21-gun salute and a presentation of the Presidential Unit Citation to Phillips’ grandfather’s unit.
- Phillips also had the opportunity to meet with the Secretary of Defense and other high-ranking officials.
“It was an incredible experience,” said Phillips. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to honor my grandfather’s legacy in such a meaningful way.”
