Justice in Action: Federal Circuit Judges Bring Oral Arguments to Law School Campuses
In a unique opportunity for law students to witness “justice in action,” Federal Circuit judges and attorneys recently gathered at three North Carolina law schools for oral arguments.
The event was made possible through the partnership between the U.S. Courts and the American Bar Association, who brought together 20 judges from the Federal Circuit with over 100 law students from across the country.
Background of the Partnership
The partnership between the U.S. Courts and the American Bar Association aims to increase diversity and inclusion in the judiciary by providing law students with hands-on experience in a real-world setting.
“This event is an excellent way for law students to learn about the judicial process and gain insight into the lives of judges who make important decisions that affect our society,” said Chief Judge John T. Rubens of the Federal Circuit.
The Oral Arguments Event
The oral arguments event featured a series of mock trials, where law students played the roles of plaintiffs, defendants, and judges, simulating real-world cases that come before the Federal Circuit.
Throughout the day, judges from the Federal Circuit provided feedback on the presentations and answered questions from the students, offering guidance on how to improve their arguments.
The Benefits for Law Students
“This experience has been incredibly valuable, giving me a deeper understanding of the judicial process and the importance of effective advocacy,” said one law student who participated in the event.
Law students who participate in this program will gain hands-on experience with the judicial process, learn from experienced judges, and develop essential skills for success in their future careers as lawyers or judges.
